Use Cloud Assembly Blueprint to deploy Kubernetes Cluster on vSphere

In this blog post I will be demonstrating how to create a Cloud Agnostic Blueprint in VMware Cloud Assembly to deploy a Kubernetes Cluster to vSphere environment.

VMware Cloud Assembly Service Overview

VMware Cloud Assembly orchestrates and expedites infrastructure and application delivery in line with DevOps principles. It uniquely provides broad and deep support for VMware-based private and hybrid clouds including VMware Cloud Foundation, VMware Cloud on AWS and vSphere as well as native AWS and Azure and GCP
public cloud environments

Requirements

You need to have the following configuration in your CAS environment
1.   VMware Cloud on AWS cloud account for the account regions that you want to deploy Cloud Assembly blueprints. Click Here for detailed instructions
2.   Image Mapping – Currently Blueprint expects input as ubuntu1604
3.   Flavor Mapping – Currently Blueprint expects input as small or medium
4.   Network Capability Tag – In my setup have added tag as “k8sdemo”
5.   Region Capability Tag – In my setup, I have added tag as “k8sdemo”
6.   Number of Nodes – By default Blueprint Deploys 1 Master and number of nodes specified as input. In my demo, I will be deploying 1 Master and 1 Worker Node

Cloud Agnostic Blueprint

Blueprints are the specifications for the resources that you deploy. We will be using Cloud Agnostic components of the blueprint so that the same blueprint can be used to deploy to any cloud. This Blueprint deploys Kubernetes using kubeadm using flannel networking . For more details on kubeadm click here. Blueprint is already shared on VMware Market Place here
  

K8s Deployment

One of the good feature CAS Blueprint it allows to Test and ensure all the configuration expected exists

Once you have verified you can now deploy from Blueprint
Once the deployment is successful you will be view the deployment details and get the Master VMs IP
You can ssh to the Master VM and ensure Kubernetes is installed
And yes, you can also add this Kubernetes Cluster to be managed by VMware Code Stream   
  • Conf file is located under \”/etc/kubernetes/admin.conf\” or
  • You can use root credentials. Default password is “changeme”

Conclusion

This hopefully showed you can leverage VMware Cloud Assembly to build a Cloud Agnostic blueprint to provision real-world, useful applications across multiple clouds.
